On May 8, 1994, the North Fillmore Police Storefront was established in a small abandoned laundromat located at the Lemon Way apartment complex. The creation of the storefront was part of the Fillmore Police Department’s plan to implement Community Based Policing in the city.
The remodeling project was accomplished through the efforts of the City of Fillmore, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and concerned citizens. The storefront consists of a combined classroom, meeting room, and office space. A small playground is located at the rear of the building, along with an adjacent larger play area for community use.
The storefront is currently staffed with two part-time civilian community resource officers (CROs) who assist local residents and facilitate scheduled programs. The storefront also serves as a satellite office for the Ventura County Probation Department’s Youth Services Officer.
Among the programs offered at the storefront are a school homework center, legal aid service, English language classes, income tax assistance, fingerprint service, brown bag lunch program, mobile health center, tattoo removal program, and safe streets program.
The CROs provide valuable assistance and referrals to all citizens of the community for any problem or concern they may have. In addition, the storefront sponsors a Christmas program, Citizens Academy, and in conjunction with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, an annual Public Safety Fair, and a Bicycle Rodeo. Monthly meetings of the North Fillmore Neighborhood Committee are also held at the storefront.
